Come along from 12:30-1:30pm each day to try out something new, have a bit of fun, and take home one of our goody bags.

Whether you’ve danced before or have been tempted to try, we have something for you!

With styles ranging from tango, capoeira and bellydancing to zumba and more there’s something for all ages.

THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE

La nuit intime is an evening of dance which creates the atmosphere of a sultry nightclub where the audience find themselves in a very informal and otherworldly environment in which they are free to move position in the venue, go to the bar, chat to friends or focus on the dancers.

Choreographer Liv Lorent offers the audience ten dancers in a succession of skilful and sensual numbers, drawing on a dizzying array of styles; including cabaret, pole-dance, flamenco and ballroom. The performance shines glimmers of light into small pockets of intimate dance exchanges, unveiling a series of imagery which envelopes the audience into a sumptuous evening where dance gets up close and personal.

La nuit intime‘s stunning visuals are completed by the rich and luxurious costumes designed and created by couture designer and long term balletLORENT collaborator Paul Shriek. La nuit intime is complemented by DJ Ben Ponton playing a highly sought after soundtrack that has the effect of a sublime jukebox – it is a seductive compilation of music that includes underground songs, rare instrumentals and some forgotten as well as contemporary classics.

Carmel is turning 80. Share in her stories, secrets and family relationships in this visionary piece of dance, theatre and film inspired by the chaos of family gatherings.

Straight from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe A Conversation with Carmel fuses the talents of some of the UK’s most exciting artists – choreographer Natasha Gilmore; performers Diana Payne-Myers; Matthew Hawkins; Jade Adamson and Vince Virr; Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison from Fringe First winner Vox Motus; composer Quee MacArthur (Shooglenifty) and filmmaker Rachel Davies plus an ensemble cast drawn from across the local community.

Following a sell-out Spring tour, highly acclaimed dance company plan B return to Aberdeen and invite you to join them for an explosive, toe-tapping, foot-stomping night-out!

Featuring the infectious and high-energy live music of Shooglenifty, the evening brings together these two dynamic forces in a meeting of music, dance, performance and a joint passion for getting people moving. Part gig, part ceilidh, plan B and Shooglenifty will re-invent the meaning of a good night out through this high-octane blend of the band’s renowned celtic acid-croft and plan B’s unique choreographic flair. Brighten up a dark night with a healthy dose of The Shoogle Project.

This major work brings together two of today’s pre-eminent dance talents, Akram Khan, world renowned for developing his own ‘contemporary kathak’ style, and international superstar Sylvie Guillem, as they explore the dynamics and language of two great classical dance forms, kathak and ballet.

“I have spent my life studying and performing kathak. It is the source of my creative process. Working with Sylvie Guillem is an exciting new challenge, giving me the opportunity to explore another classical dance language with one of its greatest exponents, and as a result unearth the things that are most often lost between the classical and modern world.”  Akram Khan

Sacred Monsters also features additional choreography by Gauri Sharma Tripathi and Lin Hwai-Min, Artistic Director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, and live music specially created by Philip Sheppard.

Performing two works from two American choreographers, and celebrating its 25th anniversary year, SDT is delighted to return to His Majesty’s in Autumn 2011.

Lay Me Down Safe
Choreographed by Kate Weare
Using sensuous yet arresting movements, Lay Me Down Safe explores whether desire – the experience we follow like a moth to flame – ultimately keeps us safe from harm, or places us right in harm’s way. The dancers bodies meet through crowds, sway, interact and form relationships. With martial arts like grace the dancers break into packs, intertwining slowly or at break neck speed.

Kate’s soundtrack features music from artists such as Leonard Cohen and Nouvelle Vague. With some adult themes and some strong language in the soundtrack, this isn’t one for younger children, we recommend this piece for ages 12+.

Khaos
Choreographed by Benjamin Levy
Khaos is an exploration of the high and lows of human life and its contradictions: We desire to be loved but fiercely protect ourselves from heartbreak; we are generous yet selfish, divine and clumsy. Levy has the dancers shifting like particles in space, buffeting one another, making way for an explosive reaction. Ben uses huge white inflatables which change and move, alternately supporting, pushing back, welcoming and suffocating the dancers as they navigate a volatile atmosphere. Incorporating the personal experiences of each artist, Khaos is a mediation on integration, ownership, and acceptance.

GOD (Grumpy Old Dancers)
Choreographed and performed by Alan Greig & Andy Howitt.
These two wildly funny, contrasting choreographers have wanted to dance this duet together for the past 25 years. They are now old and grumpy enough to do it. Watch out. It’s going to be wild, vocal, crazy and grumpy (sometimes all four at once). It will cover weather, family, death, hair loss, love and YOU. “I don’t have hair loss, it’s just migrated”.

This piece explores what happens when you allow the material to be dictated by a distinct set of rules, and movement is inspired from a unique sequence of dots and dashes.

Degrees of Freedom

Degrees of Freedom is a way of keeping score; a way of seeing how far you’ve gone from a specific point. Of course it’s numerical in distance and time, but as humans we often measure it in emotion. Especially when that point…is a moment you wish to forget.

Divine Influence
In 2005 Angela Towler and Martin Joyce collaborated as TowlerJoyce to create Divine Influence, a fast moving, passionate duet bristling with comic tension and moments of intense tenderness. The piece was first performed at The Place for Rambert Workshops and subsequently taken into Rambert Dance Company’s repertoire, where Angela is a dancer and assistant rehearsal director. This performance was filmed live at Sadler’s Wells, May 2006.

Quartet

This new work by Errol White in collaboration with Aberdeen Dance Collective focuses on individual identity to create a powerful and dynamic ensemble-piece. Throughout the choreographic process, Errol employed a variety of disciplines including technique class, improvisation, contact and body-awareness work, to assist the dancers’ development of unique and individual movement vocabularies. His aim was to lead the dancers toward a fluidity of movement that combined precision, power and strength, and to facilitate a neutral and controlled understanding of the body’s physicality in performance.

Michael Clark’s Heroes
A film by Michael Prince for BBC’s Artworks Scotland.
The one-time bad boy of British ballet Michael Clark returned to the Edinburgh Festival in 2009 for the first time in over twenty years with Come, Been and Gone in which he danced to the music of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and David Bowie. This film follows him during the rehearsals and his trip to Venice where he pays homage to two of his other heroes - Igor Stravinksy and Sergei Diaghilev.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui /Antony Gormley/ Monks from the Shaolin Temple

Celebrated Flemish/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents a dance work inspired by the skill, strength and spirituality of Buddhist Shaolin monks. He has collaborated closely with Turner Prize-winning artist Antony Gormley, who has created a design consisting of 21 wooden boxes which are repositioned to create a striking, ever changing on-stage environment. Polish composer Szymon Brzóska has created a beautiful brand new score for piano, percussion and strings which is played live.

The 17 monks performing in Sutra are directly from the original Shaolin Temple, situated near Dengfeng City in the Henan Province of China and established in 495AD by monks originating from India. In 1983 the State Council defined the Shaolin Temple as the key national Buddhist Temple. The monks follow a strict Buddhist doctrine, of which kung fu & tai chi martial arts are an integral part of their daily regime. By visiting the Shaolin Temple in China, and working with the Shaolin Monks over several months, Sidi Larbi follows a life-long interest of exploring the philosophy and faith behind the Shaolin tradition, its relationship with Kung-Fu, and its position within
a contemporary context.

Sutra has delighted audiences and critics alike both at its original home at Sadler’s Wells and on tour worldwide.
